In thinking about the challenges of recruiting and retaining adults 50+ for volunteer roles, we don’t often consider relationships with family and friends. We talk about mission, roles, location, impact and other factors, but not usually relationships.
Can this perspective help us stand in the shoes of the group we are working to engage and reframe our thinking about how best to approach and support them? Ruth Nemzoff, a scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University and specialist in family relationships, believes it can. Join Ruth and other EBN members to brainstorm ideas like:
• Engaging adult children to reach their parents.
• Recruiting spouses and partners to work as a team.
• Creating job-sharing, buddy or group options for friends.
• Linking family to recognition and community-building activities.
• Raising the link to family issues in your work to help engage adults 50+.
Ruth Nemzoff is the author of two books, Don’t Bite Your Tongue, about relationships with adult children, and Don’t Roll Your Eyes, about in-law relationships. She was assistant minority leader in the New Hampshire legislature and Deputy Commissioner for Health & Welfare in NH. Besides Brandeis, she has held academic appointments at Wellesley College and UMass, in addition to numerous board and other roles.
